Students design and build new working spaces

A $1000 grant has provided students an opportunity to design and build new collaborative working spaces in the classroom.

Last year, Grade 4 teacher Kerry Dwyer-Mitchell from St. John Paul II Catholic Elementary School, Grade 6 teacher Stephanie Toscani from St. David Catholic Elementary School, and teacher John Ivkovic from Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School were awarded a $1000 Innovation Project Grant from the London Regional Managing Information for Student Achievement (MISA) Professional Network Centres (PNC) following their attendance at the MISA PNC Innovation Day.

"Through their Creating Collaborative Learning Spaces; Designing & Building Innovative Classrooms Collaboratively Project, students from the participating elementary classes embarked on a design challenge to create collaborative learning spaces within their classrooms," said Technology & Digital Learning Consultant (JK-8) Teresa Zupancic.

"Students worked together to design different learning furniture, like standing desks and café tables, that would promote collaboration and meet their needs as Junior-level learners, using specific mathematical measurements and isometric sketches."

Through their design process, students came up with three crucial aspects they wanted for their new learning spaces. These included: curved tables that allowed for flexible groupings, whiteboard table tops so that they could write on them, and tables that adjusted in height so that they could sit or stand when using them.

These designs were shared with students from Bishop Tonnos who, in turn, built the furniture to scale under the leadership and direction of Ivkovic.

"Part of the project proposal included the desire to share the project plan and successes to inspire others to approach innovative ideas to benefit student learning," said Zupancic.

"This cross-panel innovation project was an outstanding success. I believe that it highlights student voice and connects to the 21st Century Competencies, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship."
