Competing in the first field event on opening day of the 2018 OFSAA track and field championships, Jaden Mullings of the Bishop Tonnos Titans won a gold medal.

Mullings took top honours in the midget girls’ long jump Thursday with a best leap of 5.24 metres.

She was seeded fifth coming in, having a mark of 5.02 at last week’s South Regional meet in Brampton.

Mullings will also challenge for a medal in the high jump Friday.

About 2,400 athletes from over 500 schools are competing in the three-day event. It is the largest high school track meet in Canada.

In other Day 1 action involving Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association athletes, Nifaiya Robinson of Cathedral qualified in the junior boys’400 metres. He had the fifth fastest time – 50.17 seconds.

Two other HWCAA relay teams also advanced. In the junior girls’ 4x100m event, St. Mary qualified with the third fastest clocking (50.43). The Crusaders foursome was comprised of Isabella Bauman, Olivia Stock, Rachel Watson and Taryn Millar.

In the senior boys’ 4x100m preliminaries, the St. Thomas More entry of Ike Usifo, Vincent Irobun, Liam Ford and Marqus Rookwood had the fifth best time (42.89).

Non-qualifiers included Bauman in the midget girls’ 400m (18th) and Lachlan Perigord of St. Mary in the midget boys’ 400m (12th).
