October 12, 2020
Dear Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School community,
This letter is to inform you that a student at Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School has tested positive for COVID-19. The student was last in the school on Wednesday, September 30, 2020. The positive test result was confirmed by Hamilton Public Health Services (HPHS) late Friday, October 9, 2020.
Each day, the school is mandated to report all staff and student absences, including those as a result of COVID-19, to the Ministry. If there are cases of confirmed absences due to COVID-19, Public Health is notified immediately and a chain reaction occurs. The number of COVID-19 related absences is subsequently reported on the board’s website in the banner ‘COVID-19 Advisory’. If any staff or students came in contact with the student or staff with a confirmed case, those individuals would be contacted directly.
In our school’s case, thanks to Hamilton Public Health Services for their case investigation of COVID-19, there are no school- related contacts with this individual and therefore no risk to our school. Out of respect for the privacy of the individual, personal health information and identifiers will not be released.
The school will also be following guidance from HPHS around infection prevention and control. As part of its COVID-19 action plan, the HWCDSB will undertake a deep cleaning and disinfection of all areas at the school occupied by symptomatic individuals and will ensure all preventive measures are in place. Persons who test positive may not return to school until they are cleared by HPHS.
The health, safety and well-being of our students and staff is always a priority concern for our school and school board, but is especially important as we return to classroom learning during the global pandemic. We will continue to work closely with HPHS to ensure all health and safety measures are in place to prevent transmission to other students and individuals in the school community. Students and staff should continue to attend school, unless directed otherwise by HPHS, and to screen daily for COVID-19 symptoms on the provincial COVID-19 school screening website
Please follow the directions provided in the COVID-19 school screening. If your child(ren) develops COVID-19 symptoms, they must stay home from school. Please inform the school of any absences and symptoms your child(ren) is/are experiencing.
If you have any questions about COVID-19, please consult the Hamilton Public Health COVID-19 Hotline at 905-974-9848 or firstname.lastname@example.org
In closing, we wish to assure you of our ongoing commitment to the health and safety of our students and staff, and will keep you updated as more information becomes known.
Mr. C. Barone
