On Friday Sept 13, Mrs. Siena and Mrs. Grilli had the opportunity to take their new GWL Life Skills class to the Binbrook Fairgrounds for an awesome day of hands on learning. Students got to experience how a fair comes together, seeing everything behind the curtain; the set up, the technicians, the voting process for prizes and so much more.
We explored the grounds, spoke to volunteers about their experiences, watched as vendors set up their stations and even tested rides to ensure they were ready for the onslaught of fair goers.
We learned about money management, ordering and purchasing our lunches, and finished the day by learning about the world of farming and agriculture in a presentation given by local farmers. We fed lambs, learned about chickens, alpacas and horses. We held chicks after watching them hatch, learned about the milk and beef industry, and even learned about how honey is made!
It was really wonderful to see how members of the Binbrook community come together to ensure that this event continues every year (This year being the 171st!).
This coming weekend is the Ancaster Fair, where several of our students have submitted art to the school exhibit. We look forward to finding out if they earned a ribbon! We know that the Ancaster fair is also dependent on community volunteers, and so after everything we have learned, we want to encourage students to get involved if they can!
